About Jefferson Title Company

Jefferson Title Company, was founded in 1890 by Clyde Peach-related to Sam Peach, the County Treasurer. (Interestingly, Sam then owned the land where the office is now located). Clyde's new company was called Jefferson County Abstract Company and its office was in the court house itself. All entries were hand written in the large tract books you still see displayed in today's office. Abstracts, which are records of the historical transactions, were typed by the manual typewriters you also see displayed. These records were then reviewed by an attorney who advised the buyer and seller of the status. The company was later purchased in 1937, by Ruth Sarchet who's son-in-law Bach Enfield, later took over. They had their office in the Mary Webster building on Washington Street, which now is a small cafe'. In 1967 the national company, Transamerica, purchased the company, and built the building just up the hill on 802 Washington. Del Grahm was the manager during their ownership. During the real estate depression in the 1980's, caused by high interest rates and the loss of the Hood Canal bridge in a storm, Transamerica sold their small rural company to John Nesset in 1982. Renaming it similar to the original name, substituting "title" in place of "abstract". Title Insurance replaced the abstract during the 40's and 50's as a faster means to service the needs of a transaction, and provide a clear method of recovery to owners suffering losses due to faulty titles. Nesset moved the company in 1992 to its present location.
